California Hills

This painting is a study in “green” and atmospheric perspective.  Adding purple with green is a color combination that works well for the cool side of the valley.  Using this combination against the warm greens on the sunlight side allows me to explore color harmony in a way I don’t usually try.  These small studies […]

Pfeiffer Beach

We arrived at dawn and set up to begin painting.  It was a beautiful morning, a big contrast from where we were two days earlier in Zion National Park, where it was 20 degrees.  I liked this scene at the beginning of the beach hike.  The river was making a cut in the purple-colored sand

Colors Retreat

This painting is about the rich, colorful sunsets you see at the Grand Canyon.  Exploring the bright saturated clouds using colors almost straight from the tube is an exercise in the dramatic.  The next thing to notice is the white light just above the dark canyon wall with its rose-colored highlights.  As the light slips

Moran Point

There is something special about this place.  I have been here, in the morning and the evening, and it’s a place everyone wants to see.  I started off sitting just below the viewing platform, trying to hide from the constantly changing crowd that came and went above me. It was windy when I made my

Hilo Sunrise

This ocean view is stunning.  Watching the sunrise and waves here is quintessential Big Island, vertical cliffs transition into the wave-beaten lava boulders at the shoreline below.  The waves crash into the rocks like no other place I’ve been, sometime shaking the ground you stand on.  When the sun rises and combine with the cool

Along the Boulder

This is a painting of the Boulder River about 15 minutes from where we lived in Big Timber.  We took lots of walks here over the six years we lived in Montana.  It was a favorite place of mine to go sketch and paint when I didn’t have a lot of time.  Always something to

Harbor Light

This painting was an exercise in design, using a grid of thirds.  Placing the boats on or near the intersections of the grid is a tried and true compositional tool.  The verticals of the masts add more strength to the grid of thirds and the quiet water makes the details of the sailboats even stronger.

Cultus Clouds

Living on Cultus Bay on Whidbey Island gave me time to look at the endless variety of sky and clouds over the six years we lived there.  I made this painting using a brand-new synthetic brush, a departure from my typical hog’s hair brushes.  I also used a limited pallet of 4 colors: Cadmium Yellow,

Valhalla

Valhalla Light North of Big Timber, Montana is a place called “Valhalla”.  For over 100 years, the Van Cleave family has owned this property.  After a devastating fire, I had the opportunity to stay there and help rebuild the cabins.  I also found the time to paint and photograph the surrounding landscape.  Located at the
